Jack wasn't nimble and Jack wasn't quick...

Jack couldn't save his little sister from falling through the ice. She insisted that he go and find someone to help them, scared as she was. Emma was a smart girl and knew that if they both stayed on the ice, they would both die and sent Jack away so that he'd be okay. And when the ice broke, she died instead. The Man in the Moon saw the sacrifice she made, young and innocent as she was, and brought her back to be a Guardian.
